IMMIGRANT RIGHTS: Too many workers confuse “illegal” with “immigrants”, which tends to dampen their support for basic rights owed to all workers — including our newest Americans. Such confusion not only injures American immigrants, but also hurts all of us who labor for wages. Capitalism — our economic system —while proven to be a model of efficiency, has also proven to exploit workers and their families. Not that “capitalism” hates workers — but aim of capitalism is to make maximum profits, which includes the tactic of pitting one group of workers against another — in efforts to drive down labor costs. American history is chock full of strife and economic discrimination against minorities — and thus, against all workers. Cultural, racial and ethnic groups have their differences. The Irish; Italians; Chinese; Hispanic; African Americans; French; name the group. Each group, blinded by cultural differences, for an extra nickel an hour has been guilty of holding another in a poverty ditch — while their employer fattened from extra profit. Considering the common denominator — a desire to provide a decent living and dignity for themselves and their families — cultural differences are insignificant. Isn't it time for all workers to unite, one with the other — and strive together, with strength in unity, for dignity and prosperity? We say, “Yes”!
